I dare dance for those who cannot.

 

I give a voice for those without. 

 

With the synchronized, modern elaboration of traditional Korean dance, I stretch lines and boundaries, speaking through my art. I strive to demonstrate the effervescence and fragility of the environment and its conservation. And doing such, I use both delicate and bold gestures to show the ebbs and flows of the movement of the environment through our human society. 

 

It is vital to me in seeing that my audience understands that the environment and nature are never stagnant. As such, with our very societies, they are living, breathing entities that constantly evolve and morph. 

My first dance, “Breath of the Wind,” is centered around the idea of the sun and the wind that revolves around it. To me it depicts fragility in a powerful Earth, the flow of time and necessity of change within our dying world, breathing fire until its final steps. My second dance, "Persona," hosts a flamboyant mask to represent the duality and mirrors of current efforts for conservation. It depicts the contradictory voices and actions we hold as humans, and the effects those hold upon our communities. As a dancer, my efforts circulate around creating a global voice enticing communication and awareness for all.

"Soboninkum is the traditional dance with the ups and downs of Africa’s plains. The “kum” in Soboninkum refers to a deer’s head in African tongue. However, translated my native familiarity of Korean, “kum” more closely resembles “dream.” This juxtaposition of the surreal deer and a dream embodies the cultural tie I was looking for.
African dance is a fruition of the ephemeral that quenches my thirst for persona. I let go of a white-knuckled grasp on reality and share it with everyone around. I can truly be free while diving back to the roots of dance to understand the meaning behind the movements, one clap at a time.
